How to Clean Your Rangehood Like a Pro
Your rangehood works hard every day, pulling out smoke, steam, and grease to keep your kitchen fresh. But over time, that grease and grime builds up, making your rangehood less effective — and a lot noisier. The good news? With the right approach, cleaning your rangehood doesn’t have to be a chore. Here’s how to do it like a pro.
1. Gather Your Supplies
You won’t need anything fancy. Just grab:
- Warm soapy water or a degreasing spray
- A soft cloth or sponge
- Baking soda (for stubborn grease)
- An old toothbrush (for tricky corners)
- A dry cloth for polishing
2. Clean the Exterior
Most rangehoods are stainless steel or glass. Wipe down the outside with warm soapy water or a stainless-steel cleaner. Always wipe in the direction of the grain for a streak-free finish. Don’t forget the buttons or touch controls — a quick wipe here stops sticky build-up.
3. Remove and Wash the Filters
The filters do the heavy lifting by trapping grease. Depending on your model, you’ll have either mesh filters (aluminium) or baffle filters (stainless steel).
- Pop them out and soak them in hot soapy water for 10–15 minutes.
- Scrub gently with a sponge or brush.
- For stubborn grease, add a spoonful of baking soda to the water.
- Rinse well and let them air-dry before reinstalling.
4. Wipe Inside the Hood
Grease doesn’t just stick to the filters — it builds up inside the hood too. Use a degreaser or soapy cloth to wipe inside surfaces, including around the fan area. Be gentle near wiring and lights.
5. Finishing Touches
Dry everything with a clean cloth, pop the filters back in, and give the hood a final polish. Your rangehood should look and work as good as new!
Pro Tips for a Longer-Lasting Rangehood
- Clean the filters every 4–6 weeks if you cook often.
- Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage stainless steel.
- Always run your rangehood for a few minutes after cooking to clear any remaining steam.
- Book a professional service if you notice unusual noise, weak suction, or excess condensation.
